South Georgia's long warm season creates opportunities at both ends of the calendar—but summer heat can shorten the useful window for cool-season vegetables.
About these Georgia planting windows
GA Garden uses University of Georgia Cooperative Extension guidance as the baseline for statewide planting windows. UGA notes that its standard calendar is centered on Middle Georgia (roughly the Columbus–Macon–Augusta belt). Spring planting can be about 2–3 weeks earlier in extreme South Georgia and 1–3 weeks later in North Georgia; fall planting can be later in the south and about two weeks earlier in the north. Always adjust for your local frost dates, soil temperature and current weather.
How to Adjust the Middle Georgia Calendar
UGA notes that spring planting may be roughly 2–3 weeks earlier in extreme South Georgia, while fall planting can extend later than in Middle Georgia.
Earlier Spring
Warm-season planting can begin earlier when local frost risk and soil conditions allow. Use actual conditions rather than shifting every crop by exactly the same number of days.
Summer Heat
Lean into okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes and other heat-adapted crops. Cool-season vegetables generally need to finish before sustained heat reduces quality.
Later Fall Opportunity
The later onset of cold can create a generous fall garden, but seedlings planted during late-summer heat still need careful establishment.
Winter Potential
Milder winter conditions can support cool-season production for longer periods than in North Georgia, although freezes still occur.
